R-panel, a type of ribbed metal roofing, is characterized by distinct, raised vertical ribs in the panels. It’s a durable and sturdy roofing option known for its weather resistance and ability to shed water and snow.
This type of roof is best suited for projects requiring durability and appealing aesthetics. It’s commonly used in both residential and commercial applications. The raised rib pattern adds structural strength that helps to support weight and is extremely beneficial in areas that experience heavy snowfall and rain.
Problem
While metal roofs are sturdy and durable, they require maintenance and protection to help weather the elements and prolong their serviceable lifespan. This prompted the owner of this 19,000 sq. ft. ribbed metal roof building located in Chico, Texas, to look for a coating that would enhance the durability of the roof.
Solution
The building owner decided on using Castagra’s VOC-free Ecodur Roof Coatings for this project. Ecodur+ Roof Coating, with its superior bonding ability and self-leveling characteristics, was used to coat the majority of the roof, and Ecodur1 Cool Roof Coating was used to coat the fasteners and flashings. Ecodur1 is a primerless, fiber-reinforced coating with extreme adhesion and impact resistance, and is rated by the CRRC (Cool Roof Rating Council).
Any coating is only as good as the surface preparation! The team at Texas Stag Roofing Solutions started with the necessary surface prep, which included:
- A silicone coating was found on the roof, which was confirmed via adhesion testing. Before proceeding, all of the silicone was removed.
- All the fasteners on the roof were checked for tightness, and all loose ones were replaced with one gauge larger.
- The entire metal roof was initially scrubbed using push brooms to remove all loose dirt and materials and was then pressure washed to make sure it was well cleaned.
After ensuring the roof was completely dry, a Roof Tube was used initially at all fasteners. Ecodur+ and Ecodur1 were both mixed on tarps using a low-speed mud-mixing drill. Ecodur1 was then applied to all the fasteners and flashings. Tank spreaders with an R-profile roller and hand-held rollers from Rooftop Equipment were used to apply Ecodur+ at a minimum thickness of 30 mils.
