Phoenix, AZ, July 11, 2018 - “The use of Ecodur as a flat roof primer capped with a silicone coating is about as perfect a defence against all weathers as it’s possible to get,” says Peter Roosen, CEO, Castagra Products, Inc.
“Our veggie-plastic has the most extraordinary adhesion to roof substrates, well beyond that of most conventional coatings and membranes. Now, with the additional focus beyond longevity of performance in reducing heat load, it works phenomenally well with cool roof silicone formulations.
“Ecodur provides the ideal primer base for them as well as tough to coat cementitious roofs. The market is moving away steadily from roofing materials that involve seams and high levels of VOCs.
“Freeze thaw cycles, extremes of heat and subsequent ponding of rainwater eventually wear down the protective qualities of most conventional flat roof coatings and membranes which mostly do not provide high reflectivity so needed to maintain cooler substrate temperatures.”
Roosen pointed out that zero VOC, zero BPA Ecodur is made from renewable castor oil and recyclable gypsum, two natural materials that, when plasticized, provide unique qualities of infinite repairability and flexibility. Ecodur re-bonds to its original surfaces at the molecular level and, with its very high chemical and UV resistance, it can be a standalone flat roof coating providing a permanent waterproof solution.
“Today’s building owners and managers are looking to radically extend the life of their roofs with minimum maintenance cost and maximum performance when it comes to HVAC energy costs. They want to avoid re-roofing where possible, but, if it has become necessary, then they want an economical solution that will provide a roof life going beyond 20 to 30 years.
“In very large areas of the world, cool roof demand is soaring. We see Ecodur as the perfect primer for them. We get outstanding adhesion at the substrate level, but, vitally, also in combination with high performance silicones that have been engineered to create the maximum cooling effect. Silicone coatings provide better moisture resistance than acrylics and asphalts. Ecodur is the perfect base for them.”
A report issued by The Freedonia Group in December, 2017, states: “Demand for silicone liquid-applied roof coatings is forecast to rise 5.1% annually to 2.44 million squares* in 2021. This above average growth rate will be spurred by rapid gains for cool roofing applications as roofing professionals opt for coatings that meet CRRC cool roofing guidelines while also offering superior performance properties.”
Roosen said the formulation has a 25-year history of being used in some of the toughest environments anywhere such as the fracking industry in hundreds of production water and oil tanks.
“Ecodur provides the one-two weather protection punch solution for flat roofs, especially when combined with silicones for maximum cool roof effect. You have to get it right not just on top with the high reflectance of infra red and UV, you also have to make sure that what the silicone is sitting on is also going to allow it to perform for decades to come too,” concluded Roosen.
