Ecodur 201: Coating an Irrigation Ditch Overflow Pool


About 20 million tons of road salts are spread on US highways annually to make them safer during icy conditions. Nearly all of it gets dissolved and flows off into drainage systems, nearby streams and rivers, and often into lakes. Anywhere it comes into contact with concrete it can have varying degrees of corrosive effects.

In very low dilutions it has little or no measurable effects on aquatic life. However, there are mandated maximum limits for chlorides. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency has set a long-term threshold for aquatic life of 230 milligrams per liter. Canada’s guideline for long-term exposure is 120 mg/liter. (For comparison, seawater has a chloride concentration of nearly 20,000 mg/liter.)

Road salts, as mentioned, have enormous potential to damage unprotected concrete as can be seen in many public parking facilities exposed to drip off of salts from vehicles. In this case study, a township suburb of Denver, Colorado, wanted to protect its irrigation run-off overflow storage area. The client wanted to not only a coating that was durable, but also one that would not add any toxic burden from VOC’s or other chemical content.

Ecodur has 25 years of use on concrete. One of its standout performance features is its extraordinary adhesion levels with this material, about double that of conventional epoxy coatings. Furthermore, it has no VOCs and is completely non-toxic. Being rated for safe contact with potable water, it is highly suitable for water and wastewater facilities, particularly those that experience cold winters where wide temperature fluctuations can lead to early failure of conventional epoxy coatings.

Ecodur has been well proven out in the fracking industry where it lines hundreds of tanks that hold production water and oil with the numerous associated chemicals that are used in the process, many of which are acidic.

It is made from renewable castor oil and naturally occurring gypsum to form what is, in simple terms, a highly stable and durable plasticised gypsum with varying degrees of retained flexibility.


Application Results
The surfaces were cleaned of any contamination such as dirt, dust and loose material. They were dry when the Ecodur was manually applied to depths of between 40 and 50 mils. A tack-free state was achieved after approximately 30 minutes and full cure within 24 hours, allowing the site to be declared fully operational.

The total area covered was an estimated 2,500 square feet. The applicators wore protective clothing that covered all exposed skin areas, and industrial standard fully eye protection. When being coated, Ecodur is highly reactive to any exposed tissue and safety guidelines for using the product must be strictly adhered to. Commercial paint shakers should also be used to ensure a perfect mix and again to reduce any risk from manual mixing.

The client reported complete satisfaction with the coating and was particularly appreciative of Ecodur’s ‘green’ credentials with no loss of performance as compared to conventional products. With Ecodur’s ability to have surfaces repaired for an indefinite period as it will always recombine fully to clean and dry original Ecodur, long term maintenance costs should be kept to an absolute minimum.
