Castagra’s Ecodur ‘Bang On’ Trend as Protective Coatings Market Sees Key Driver Being Demand For Lower VOCS.

Phoenix, AZ. “What could be sweeter than having one of the toughest protective coatings in the market with zero VOCs that is also solvent-free, BPA-free, free of PGEs, non-toxic and approved for use in contact with drinking water,” commented CEO, Peter Roosen, following the release of a key industry market study.

Research company, Technavio, recently forecast the global protective resins market climbing to $22 billion by 2021 with ‘the increasing corrosion costs and demand from emerging countries are the major drivers of the market.’

One particular market driver is the growth in maritime transportation.

“Our coating was first used on large C-Class ferries over 20-years ago and vastly outperformed conventional deck epoxies which showed micro-cracking failures within months of application on sister ships. 20-year plus lab brine tests have showed absolutely no measurable degradation.

“Today, we are very much focused on flooring with special demand for use in food and other preparation areas where there is an absolute need for zero odor and zero VOCs,” continued Roosen.

Mordor Intelligence’s market report released in October, stated: ’Another major factor driving the growth of the protective coatings market is the increasing usage of eco-friendly coatings. However, the harmful and hazardous impact of solvent-borne coatings on human health and environment, combined with the enactment of stringent environmental regulations by the international agencies, are hindering the solvent-borne coatings market growth. Consequently, boosting the demand for eco-friendly coatings such as water-borne coatings, and powder coatings.’

Roosen continued, “Again, we are bang on trend as we are the eco-friendliest protective coating out there. Our two main ingredients are renewable castor oil and recyclable gypsum, which is a naturally occurring soft mineral. We also do not have any solvent in content, any solvent in usage or clean-up.

“Much is made of the trend to waterborne coatings because of the ever-increasing demand for the lowest possible VOCs. Aside from our coatings having zero VOCs we also do not have any propylene and glycol ethers (PGEs) which were the focus of a major Swedish health study.

The research by Karlstad University in Sweden focused on the prevalence of PGEs in bedroom air and its association with asthma, hay fever, and eczema, but also with antibodies against common allergens in children. The study showed a risk increase of up to 180 percent.

Carl-Gustaf Bornehag, Professor of Public Health Science at Karlstad University and associated with the SP Technical Research Institute of Sweden, said “Our analyses also revealed that the use of water-based paint in the dwelling, as well as water-based cleansers, was linked to a higher concentration of PGEs in bedroom air.”

Water-based paint, in another study, was shown to also emit small amounts of isobutanol, toluene, xylene, trimethylbenzenes, n-nonane, n-decane, and n-undecane.

Roosen concluded, “I have said it before and I’ll say it again, the post Second World War generations have had an unprecedented level of exposure to new chemical compounds in consumer products. It is estimated that the number totals over 100,000 which is a truly staggering figure. With protective coatings you can never have too much purity. Castor oil and gypsum polymerized. That’s about as simple as it gets.”

Castagra Products Inc., has its registered office in Reno, Nevada, and headquarters in Phoenix, Arizona. It has its main toll production facility in Houston in Texas. The company is focussed on providing ultra-protective VOC-free, BPA-free, non-toxic coatings for flooring, roofing, water and waste water industries and oil, gas, frac production water storage tanks and pipes.
