Industrial Coatings for Formaldehyde – Ecodur 201

You may have heard that formaldehyde is a potentially dangerous chemical. But did you know the chemical is naturally present in your body? In fact it is found in the bloodstream of humans and other primates at concentrations of approximately 0.1 millimolar due to the metabolism of endogenous amino acids.
What is formaldehyde?
Formaldehyde is a hydrocarbon that is produced principally by the vapor-phase oxidation of methanol and is commonly sold as formalin, a 37 percent aqueous solution. It was discovered in 1867 when the technical synthesis by dehydration of methanol was achieved in 1867 by the German chemist August Wilhelm von Hofmann. Pure formaldehyde is a colorless, flammable gas with a strong pungent odor.
What are the uses of formaldehyde?
Formaldehyde has a wide variety of uses including:
1. Building materials
Formaldehyde-based glues are used in a variety of products such as furniture, stairs, flooring cabinets and flooring. Higher formaldehyde levels are usually found in newer homes or homes with new construction.
2. Embalming agent
Formaldehyde magically preserves the bodies of the dead by the cross-linking of primary amino groups in proteins with other nearby nitrogen atoms in the protein or DNA of body cells. Although it doesn’t fully prevent decay, it does slow it down drastically.
3. Wrinkle-free clothing
Formaldehyde is used in clothing to prevent wrinkles and to prevent mildew during shipping, so it’s a good idea to wash new clothes before you wear them.
4. Disinfectant and Biocide
Formaldehyde is used in certain vaccines to inactivate bacteria. It is also used as a disinfectant as it kills bacteria and fungi.
