4 Resources to Help Girls and Women Succeed in the Oil and Gas and STEM Industries

I recently read an article that women are still getting paid lower salaries than men. In fact, in 2014 female bosses earned 35% less than male colleagues in the United Kingdom.
What gives?
I thought that women had reached a point in our generation where we were on an even keel with men. I was wrong.
I realized women having equal opportunities to men is a fairly new phenomenon. We are still fine-tuning the process. The upside is the young women of this generation are able to make big changes and pave the way for us and future women to do the things our mothers weren’t encouraged to do.
That’s why I am really impressed by all the initiatives and resources that are in place to help women succeed in the oil and gas and science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) industries. If you are a woman working in the oil and gas or STEM industries or are a young student thinking of getting into the oil and gas or STEM industries, here are four resources that can provide you with support and/or mentoring to lead you to success.
Young Women In Energy, Calgary, Canada
Young Women In Energy is a resource to help women by educating them with an innovative speaker series, panel discussions and activities. It is supported by energy companies such as Enbridge, Husky Energy, and Talisman Energy.
The resource also provides women with career opportunities and peer mentoring. Peer mentoring is a fantastic way to receive support by communicating with peers, (women in a similar job level to you) and discussing your challenges and successes.
To become a member of Young Women in Energy’s peer mentoring, simply become a member, look through its membership directory and contact a person you would like to have a peer mentorship relationship with.
FabFems, US
FabFems is an inspiring directory and national database of women in STEM professions who are inspiring role models for high school students. The resource hopes to help increase gender equity and increase the number of women working in STEM professions.
FabFems believes that: “when girls have approachable role models (women in STEM who see their work as rewarding, relevant, and enjoyable), their impression of what it means to be a STEM professional can change dramatically and they are more likely to pursue STEM courses and careers.”
Project Scientist, California, US
74% of women are interested in pursuing a STEM career, however only 25% of women currently work in STEM. Project Scientist wants to help lessen the disconnect. Sandy Marshall, the Executive Director of The NASCAR Foundation, started Project Scientist as research showed that girls with a high skill, aptitude, and talent for STEM subjects were not given opportunities to encourage their growth at a young age.
Project Scientist offers five-week summer courses for girls ages four to 14 to explore science and meet like-minded friends. Featured professionals with unique and exciting jobs also attend the camps to speak to the girls about their experiences.
Women’s Energy Network (WEN), East Anglia, United Kingdom
Women’s Energy Network is an invitation-based business networking group for British women leaders in the energy industry. WEN aims to provide networking opportunities for local women leaders and raise the profile and awareness of senior women in the local energy industry. The organization hopes to help increase the number of women in the energy industry by offering support, advice and mentoring.
