2 Technologies That Could Revolutionize Offshore Drilling

Offshore drilling sites are in some of the most challenging environments in the world. The sites live extremely far from land and the inhospitable conditions can wreak havoc on oil rig equipment and worker safety. It therefore takes a lot of innovation and intelligence to create technologies that revolutionize offshore drilling.
These two companies seem to have what it takes. Here are two technologies that could revolutionize offshore drilling:
1. One Subsea – Subsea Wet Gas Compressor
The world’s first subsea wet gas compressor station is now ready for final testing at Horsøy, Norway before being equipped for installation and hook-up to Gullfaks South Brent reservoir in 2015.
The subsea wet gas compressor will allow gas to be compressed on the subsea equipment instead of on the surface water. This allows the gas to move more quickly upwards to a nearby platform and lets subsea wells to continue to extract and send gas upward. The benefit of a wet gas compression facility is that it does not require any treatment of the wellstream before compression. This allows smaller modules and a simpler construction on the seabed.
The recovery factor for gas from Gullfaks South Brent can be increased from 63% to 73% due to the addition of the subsea wet gas compressor and conventional low-pressure production in a later phase. This means up to 22 million new barrels of oil from the Gullfaks field alone could be produced.
2. Ground Effects Environmental Services – Electro Separation Cell Technology
Imagine being able to reduce offshore drilling costs by $100,000 to $200,000 per well. Sean Frisky, CEO of Ground Effects Environmental Services, thinks it’s a possibility with new electro separation cell technology (ESC).
According to LEADER-POST: “the ESC process uses electricity to remove ultrafine particles and reclaims the oiling fluids from drilling mud, allowing the drilling fluid to be reused again on site.” This leads to reclamation of oil-based drilling fluid and a dramatic reduction in disposal costs. (Without ESC companies haul the oiling fluids onto land for disposal which includes high costs of shipping and truck transportation.)
The company recently signed a $15-million deal with a Malaysian firm to licence its new ESC technology for the Asian market.
