Veggie-Plastic Coating Gaining Niche in Fracking Industry’s Secondary Containment Boom

RENO, NEVADA, November 7, 2014 — Veggie-plastic coatings and foams with their natural fire retardant qualities, are out-competing conventional polyurethane coatings in the secondary containment boom says Castagra CEO, Peter Roosen.

“Ecodur has proven to be one of the toughest frack tank interior coatings ever produced, so it was a natural progression that they be applied in secondary containment which can, potentially, face the very same chemical and corrosion challenges as frac tanks in the event of spills.

The Environmental Protection Agency developed Spill Prevention Control and Countermeasures (SPCC) that specify the design, sizing and requirements for secondary containment and spill prevention systems in the oil and gas drilling industries. Basically, they require facility owners or operators with more than 1,320 gallons of above-ground oil storage capacity, or 42,000 gallons of underground oil storage capacity to have a written plan that addresses how the facility will prevent oil spills to navigable waters and adjoining shorelines.

Roosen said that it is vital secondary containment have the highest possible protective qualities, particularly where there is the potential for tank failure of fluids from the fracking industry.

“The whole business has got vastly more complicated in terms of chemistry in the past decade with major challenges being posed especially by the various acids being used, including formic and hydrochloric. Protection of groundwater supplies are paramount as is, of course, the safety of on-site workers,” he continued.

Ecodur, which is made principally from gypsum, a naturally occurring mineral, and castor oil, is non-toxic, VOC-free, and does not contain any solvents or require any for clean-up. It has a potable water rating and a Class A fire rating, being largely self-extinguishing when subjected to high heat sources as it emits water vapor.

Additionally, Ecodur’s recoat window is the big advantage, as being able to modify the containment system such as adding in piping, is not limited by time as it is with conventional epoxies.

“Secondary containment is the last line of defence. There is absolutely no need to scrimp on providing the same level of coating protection as used in frac tanks,” concluded Roosen.

Castagra Products, Inc., is a leader in the multi-billion dollar premium eco coatings industry with its non-toxic, VOC-free, solvent-free, plasticised gypsum coatings that have pioneered the industry and offer outstanding versatility and protection qualities particularly in the fracking industry with its unique challenges for protecting steel containers and pipes. The company has toll production operations in Texas and California.
