Plant-based Ingredients in Everyday Products

Natural ingredients seem to be the answer to everything nowadays. Have an itchy dog with dry skin issues? Lovingly brush some coconut oil on him. Want to prevent Alzheimer’s disease? Slurp on a spoon of tasty omega rich fish oil. Want a non-toxic industrial coating that is super safe and sustainable? Make a coating with castor oil.
Castor oil has been making moves in the industrial arena in the past years. We use it in our industrial coating and it also is used in a variety of other everyday products. That got us thinking. What other products are we using everyday that are using plant-based ingredients to boost their sustainability?
We checked out some of these most commonly used plant-based ingredients in everyday products to see which contain natural ingredients.
Can contain palm oil. Palm oil comes from the oil palm where an impressive 50% of the fruit is oil. Oil palms can grow 20 meters tall with leaves up to five meters long.
Anti-dandruff shampoo
Can contain coconut oil. It seems like pretty much every ailment in the world can be cured by coconut oil, and dandruff is no different. Coconut oil kills fungus, and dandruff is caused by fungus.
Car wax
You’re a car owner and you’re faced with a dilemma. Carnauba wax or paint sealant? Carnauba wax comes from a palm-like tree in Brazil. By nature, it’s designed to coat, protect, and repel the leaves from harsh weather conditions like rain and UV rays. It also has great breathing ability, which makes it fantastic for automobile paint. But in its natural state, the wax is unusable. Manufacturers must first blend the wax with other oils and solvents to make it more workable. In the end, the polish is rich in color.
Paint sealant or synthetic sealants are designed to be tougher lasting. They usually come in an affordable easy-to-use spray bottle and can last upwards of six months, where a wax can usually last about a month in ideal conditions. Sealants typically give a brighter and more reflective shine than the warmer luster of carnauba wax.
And as a side note, cars contain plastic foam produced from castor oil. For example the Ford Focus uses this plastic foam for its instrument panel and according to Ford representative, Bari Brown, it is stronger, better-looking and better on the environment than petroleum based plastics. Customers like it more too; they claim that it is softer and more appealing.
Hand cream
Can contain grapeseed oil. Grapeseed oil is a very light oil that easily absorbs into the skin without an oily residue. It also helps to speed up healing by stimulating skin tissue regeneration. It may even help in the fight against aging by banishing the appearance of lines and wrinkles.
Lip balm
Can contain coffee bean oil. Other than smelling delicious, coffee bean oil packs a punch for lip-care by providing anti-inflammatory and antioxidant benefits to your lips.
Facial moisturizer
Can contain argan oil. Argan oil hails all the way from Morocco and has been used in a variety of beauty products. The oil is slam packed with essential fatty acids, anti-oxidants, vitamins and minerals that help to moisturize, soften, and protect your face from sun damage without harmful toxins and parabens.
Can contain red raspberry seed oil. This interesting oil actually has a natural SPF of 28-50 depending on its quality and protects against UVA and UVB rays. The SPF of red raspberry seed oil has also been found to be the same as titanium dioxide.
Leather conditioner
Can contain flax seed oil. Want to put some shine on your favorite pair of leather shoes? Flax seed oil gives leather a deep shine without the use of harmful petroleum distillates (which is what you smell when you use regular toxic leather polish).
