Repurposing Oil & Gas Equipment

Once an oil structure has outlived its purpose, they become quite useless. You may argue that the inactive structure is wasteful and even an eyesore. But fear not, industrious architects, designers, and engineers have turned some former oil structures into something truly amazing.

See below for these transformations.

“Big Rig Jig” Giant Truck Sculpture
Mike Ross designed this behemoth sculpture of two repurposed 18-wheeler oil tanker trucks. No wonder it’s called the Big Rig Jig for a reason.

Wind Turbine Platforms
Another great way to reuse inactive oil rigs is to turn them into wind turbines, which is exactly what SeaEnergy Renewables is doing. Winds are high offshore, which make it a great place to capture wind energy. And with the oil rigs already situated in the water, they make a fantastic base for the wind turbines.

Capsule Hotel
If you ever go to Netherlands, make sure to check out these oil rig survival hotel pods near The Hague. The pods are unaltered – except with the addition of an outside lock and an emergency toilet. It was first created as an art project in 2004 by Denis Oudendijk, and can snuggly hold up to three people inside each pod.

Spacecraft Launch Platform
In 1997, a mobile drilling oil rig built for Ocean Drilling & Exploration Company (ODECO), was converted into a self-propelled semi-submersible spacecraft. It’s currently used by Sea Launch for equatorial Pacific Ocean launches, and it’s based in the Port of Long Beach. The vessel can currently hold up to 68 crew members and launch system personnel, along with living, dining, and recreation areas.
