Tank Storage Professionals: What’s the best advice you’ve ever received?

We created this “The Best Storage Tank Maintenance Advice You’ve Ever Received” article a while back and wanted to follow it up with an article focused on general professional advice. We asked our contacts in the LinkedIn storage tanks groups and this is the feedback we got. Do you have anything that you would like to add? Send an email to or post your suggestion in the forum.

You might find this humorous, but the best advise that I ever received was if a fellow employee asked me what my compensation packet was with the company that I should tell them, “everyone works their own deal.”
Also, my dad told me, “if you work for a man, work for him!”

I have two pieces of advice that are my favorites, take your pick.
1. From my dad: You’ll never plow a field by doing it in your mind, get to work!
2. From my mom during my Spring Break days in college: Don’t get anything on you that you can’t wipe off.

By far – years ago, I attended a speech delivered by Nancy MacKay (now at MacKay CEO Forums) where she encouraged the audience to park your ego…she wasn’t referring to boastfulness, but rather, being defensive, playing the blame game, saying negative things about others. Great advice – both professionally and personally.
Pure professional advice? Always work like an owner!

The best advice I ever received is: “never assume I have learned it all”, and “no matter how good you think you are, there’s always someone better”. I know these are one-liner but they have resonated in my head since they were said to me.

“Shoot low, they are riding in on shetlands!”

This is not storage tank maintenance advice but still applies. I received this advice from a customer 20+ years ago. At the time I was the Project Manager for a large project and I was in a meeting with the customer discussing the activities we had in process. I was 30 minutes into the discussion when the customer stopped me and said. “All this is great. However don’t confusion activity with results”. He was right of course and since that day I’ve adopted that phrase as a guiding principle.
