Canada’s Largest Drilling Rig

A monster is being born at the Nisku, Alberta manufacturing facility. Trinidad Drilling, a world leader in providing modern, reliable, expertly designed and the most adaptable, technologically advanced oil and gas drilling equipment, is constructing a new 3,000 horsepower rig capable of drilling to a depth of 8,000 meters.

Trinidad Drilling is constructing this drilling rig – Canada’s largest – to help the anonymous natural gas producer to extract Liard Basin natural gas found deep below the surface of Northeast British Columbia, Canada.

One of the biggest challenges of drilling to 8,000 meters is the extreme high pressures at found at such depths. Failure to manage and control these pressure effects can cause serious equipment damage and injury, or loss of life.

Lisa Ciulka, vice president of investor relations with Trinidad Drilling, disclosed that the new rig would be the largest of their fleet with the next largest rig having a 6,000 meter depth capacity working in British Columbia’s Horn River Basin.  The new 8,000 meter drilling rig has a 1.25 million pound hook load capacity while the typical rig would have a 750,000 pound hook load capacity.  Increasing the hook load capacity is necessary due to the extra 2,000 meters of drill pipe required to reach the required depth of 8,000 meters.

Ciulka explained that their customers are demanding large equipment that does not exist.  Trinidad Drilling is finding themself with new opportunities to build rigs twice the size of the previous build. Trinidad Drilling will not publicly state how much the new 8,000 meter drilling rig will cost, but being twice the size of rigs that cost about $20 million we can only speculate the costs will be significantly greater.  With construction time taking about one year to complete, we can expect to see the new 8,000 meter rig being commissioned and moved into the field abound September 2014.
