New Technologies and Trends in the Oil & Gas Industry

With focus on data, the environment, and safety, the following is a collection of technologies and trends being used in the oil and gas industry today.

Wave Glider

Liquid Robotics created the Wave Glider, which is a marine robot that collects high-value ocean data in research, defense, and oil and gas exploration. It’s a versatile platform with GPS and computers for navigation and payload control. It also has a satellite communication system and sensors to measure its surrounding environment, It’s powered by solar panels.

Big Data
Speaking of collecting data, the oil and gas industry is no exception in terms of the growing demand for big data. Several companies have invested in this, including EMC, who announced a $100 million investment to open a big data R&D center in Brazil, which will focus on big data analytics for the oil and gas industry. Other firms also have plans for the oil and gas industry, including IBM and Cisco.

Environmental Technologies

Many oil and gas companies are taking extra steps to ensure environmental safety, including treating water produced in the extraction of natural resources.
Geopure Hydrotechnologies, for instance, aims to provide turnkey wastewater recycling solutions to oil and gas producers, allowing companies to outsource water treatment. FilterBoxx Water & Environmental Corp is developing de-oiling and treatment options produced by thermal oil extraction methods, such as steam-assisted gravity drainage.
