Happy Earth Day! Sustainability Tips for the Storage Tank Industry

Earth Day is an annual day on which events are held worldwide to promote and support environmental issues that face our world today. We took this opportunity to ask our collegues in the Storage Tank industry about their sustainability tips and this is what they shared with us. Feel free to send us a tip at tatsuya.n at Special thanks to david.nikonvscanon for the Perlan geothermal storage tank photo.

When I think of sustainability my thought process is immediately split in two. Initially I think of environmental implications and longevity. In the second instance I think of competitive resilience, self-sufficiency and profitability. With that in mind, one hand often washes the other.  In comparison to other industries the tank storage sector is relatively unhindered and is not over regulated. For sure there are rules in place such as SPPC (Spill Prevention, Control and Counter-measurement), which emphasise spill prevention, preparedness and response to the impact of oil leaks. Alongside that, many terminal operators conduct their own intermittent reports, tests, maintenance and repair information. As a result, this helps terminal operators reduce their own risk while outwardly projecting a proactive and attentive corporate image; thus adding to their own commercial sustainability. Therefore my tip is to stay on top of your official AND unofficial obligations.

Healthier your tank bottom is, healthier your tank will be…….
Practice for making a strong bottom will always be fruitful. I have experienced many tanks that are affected from underside corrosion (pitting). This is mainly because of the interaction of the soil with bottom or from water seepage from outside. Since internal inspection of tank mainly rely on the integrity of tank bottom hence, during the tank erection, considerations must be given to the factors such as monitoring closely the soil acidity, spending time on preventive measures such as cathodic protection system and installing leak detection systems. In addition, one should keep an eye on outsiders such as water which may enter and damage the tank bottom.
Ensuring these safe practices not only result in a strong and long lasting tank but also there is a cut off in the cost of internal inspection by increasing the life of bottom.

“Waste not, want not… Everyone involved in the design and construction process should think about the impact their choices make. Consult specialists to design good handling systems, and use quality products that are efficient and last. Spend the extra costs upfront so as not to waste future fuel, energy, and parts. It’s worth it alone in the resources we save.”

Darren  Darren Philp, Sales & Marketing Manager – Surface Active Solutions Ltd
“When the time comes to clean storage tanks, I encourage tank owners to really do their homework. Having the right chemistry couple with the right engineering can save owners millions in money, time, produced waste, disposal costs, stress and heartache. Don’t just settle for a product – DEMAND A SOLUTION!!!”

Sam  Sam Mannino, Managing Director, Investors First Capital
“A proper foundation and installation is the key to safety. Most all tanks made in the USA are certified but some of the Asian tanks are of great concern and buyers should beware of price, quality and fake certifications. A tank of inferior quality tank could easily cause an environmental disaster.”

This is our small contribution to the cause.
