Meet Your LinkedIn Moderator: Caroline Edge, Business Development Manager, HCB Publishing Ltd

Being an effective moderator takes time and effort. They have to encourage good discussion and fend off spammy posts. I wanted to feature and thank Caroline who is the moderator for the HCB Dangerous Goods LinkedIn Group.

Tell us about your background?
Caroline was born and educated in the north of England before going to Belgium in 1980 where she spent 18 happy years just outside Brussels. Whilst she was there she did a degree at Louvain La Neuve University and worked for a short while at Procter and Gamble in Zaventem. Her two daughter were born in Belgium and are both fluent in French. Caroline still has the Jane Birkin accent when she speaks French.

Tell us about your company/job?
My company Hazardous Cargo Bulletin (HCB) was established in 1980 to help those involved in the transport of dangerous goods to keep up to date with changing regulations. Peter Mackay publisher has been the main driving force in ensuring the magazine continues to report on regulatory developments and readers get news of products and services to enable them to make their operations safer or more efficient

The magazine covers the transport of all kinds of dangerous goods, but particularly liquid chemicals, liquefied gases, explosives and radioactive materials. It covers transport by all modes: road, rail, maritime (bulk and packaged), inland waterway and air. Its coverage is also global in scope, covering not only North America and Western Europe but also the Far East, South-East Asia, Australasia, the Middle East, Africa and Latin America. HCB has full-time writers based in the US and in Poland and a network of part-time contributors in Singapore, India, Brazil, Zambia and elsewhere.

My role within the company is multi-faceted. We are a small team and my job role includes attending exhibitions to promote the magazine, looking after subscribers and helping with the development of systems that support the business as it goes from strength to strength. We are all immensely proud of the HCB magazine and what it continues to achieve.

What people may not know about you
I also do some voluntary work for the Citizens Advice Bureau in the UK. The CAB is a charity which delivers advice services from over 3,500 community locations in England and Wales, run by 382 individual charities. The Citizens Advice service helps people to resolve their problems. As the UK’s largest advice provider we are equipped to deal with any issue, from anyone, spanning debt and employment to consumer and housing plus everything in between. I find this exceptionally rewarding and it helps me keep unto date with government legislation in many areas.

PS I also run in my spare time and did a 10 mile run to raise money for the CAB in February 2013 – here is an awful photo of me running!
